COINTELPRO is an acronym for the FBI’s Counter Intelligence Program, which was used in the 1960s to monitor, manipulate and disrupt social and political movements in the United States. From 1956 to 1971, the FBI amalgamated its illegal surveillance operations together under the title COINTELPRO. While COINTELPRO was initially aimed at the Communist Party in the United States, it soon expanded its efforts to include civil rights activists, anti-war activists, Native activists, and New Left organizers. Counterintelligence is the term for any anti-espionage or surveillance activities aimed at spying on or breaking up domestic threats. In 1956, fresh off of the McCarthyite persecution of the early 1950s, the FBI perceived exactly this kind of threat from the Socialist Workers’ Party and the Communist Party of the United States (CPUSA). Certainly, COINTELPRO had its impact when the events were taking place.
